79th new folks

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The 79th Air Refueling Squadron commander, Lt. Col. John B. Williams, recently welcomed Lt. Neal Blasco and Capt. Amanda Naylor, as the newest pilots hired to the unit. Aircrew members from Beale Air Force Base, Calif., were invited to interview for positions at a board held in the 79th ARS here at Travis in July. Beale AFB was affected by the outcome of the most recent Base re-alignment and closure Commission in 2005. One of the results of the Commission’s work was to change the mission of the 940th Air Refueling Wing. In this change the wing lost its KC-135 Stratotankers and replaced them with RQ-4 Global Hawks. Now after a long and distinguished history of manned flight, the squadron is to change to operating unmanned aerial vehicles in a reconnaissance role. This change and others at Beale was quite a blow to many members of the 940 ARW. Some were able to cross train to new jobs at the base, while others retired. Many began to look for positions across the Command. Travis AFB, located nearby with its extensive Air Force Reserve Command flight operations, was an obvious place for members so displaced to consider. (U.S. Air Force courtesy photo)

301st AS welcomes new commander

Lt. Col. Allan R. Davis presents a challenge coin to his son, Brandon, at the conclusion of the 301st Airlift Squadron change of command ceremony in which the colonel assumed command of the unit from Col. William B. Featherston Jun. 7, 2008. Colonel Davis is a command pilot with more than 4,500 flying hours, including more than 130 in combat. He is a commercial airline pilot in civilian life. The Air Force Reserve associate squadron is assigned to the 349th Air Mobility Wing and flies the C-17 Globemaster III, the newest cargo aircraft in the Air Force inventory. TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Mr. Bert Gaulke, chairman of the Travis Regional Armed Forces Committee (center), accepts the highest state-level Department of Defense award for civilian employers here May 19 from Mr. Robert O. Anderson, Executive Director of California-North committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (right), and is thanked by Col. Maryanne Miller, commander of the 349th Air Mobility Wing (left). The Pro Patria Award honors employers which make extraordinary efforts to adopt policies and take actions supporting employees serving in the Guard and reserve. Only one Pro Patria Award is presented by each state ESGR committee annually. The Travis Regional Armed Forces Committee is a local community organization dedicated to supporting the Airmen and missions of Travis Air Force Base. Its membership is comprised of more than 150 local business and civic leaders. The ESGR operates through a network of more than 4,200 volunteers in 54 committees located in each state, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Europe. The exercise is designed to train medical personnel for deployment into combat areas by setting up and operating a fully functioning hospital in the field.
