Beck's Blog

In a final pilgrimage to pay his respects to a fellow civil engineer, Chief Master Sgt. Michael Beck left a gift at the feet of "Our Lady of the Snows Shrine" at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. More fondly known as "Roll Cage Mary" because of the structure built to protect her from the elements, this statue of the Virgin Mary watches over all souls that were lost during the building of the station, but is dedicated to one. A bronze plaque nearby remembers the tragic death, while in the line of duty, of Construction Driver 3rd Class Richard T. Williams, U.S. Navy Seabees. He lost his life when his D-8 tractor broke through the ice in 1956, during "Operation Deep Freeze I." He plunged 350 fathoms to the bottom of McMurdo Sound, his body never recovered.
