Veterans Day 2016 was no different than past years for Airmen of Travis Air Force Base. Airmen from the 60th and 349th Air Mobility Wings, and the 621st Contingency Response Wing West, were out in local communities participating in ceremonies and parades.

Retired Senior Master Sgt. Ellen Hatfield, 349th AMW public affairs chief of community relations, delivered the key note speech for the ceremony in American Canyon. Her speech told the story of World War II hero, Corporal Desmond T. Doss, a Seventh Day Adventist and conscientious objector, who saved the lives of 100 of his fellow soldiers on Okinawa, and was the recipient of the Medal of Honor.

Hatfield met Doss while she was assigned to 22nd Air Force headquarters at Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Georgia. Here, she presents a copy of the book about Doss, “The Unlikeliest Hero,” to Mayor Leon Garcia, and his wife, Eva, to share with the community. The movie about Doss’s life and heroic actions, “Hacksaw Ridge,” was released Nov. 4.
