For more than three decades, members of the 349th Air Mobility Wing and Team Travis have been participating in Operation Teddy Bear. This year during OTB Airmen will visit local Solano County kindergarten children and distributed gift bags filled with Teddy bears, candy canes, juice boxes, toys, and pencils. TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Reserve Airmen with the Travis Air Force Base Honor Guard demonstrate how to fold the flag for these kindergarteners at Cleo Gordon Elementary School in Fairfield. The Honor Guard were visiting the children with "Santa" and his Travis elves, as part of Operation Teddy Bear. Every year, reservists from the 349th Air Mobility Wing work with local donors to put together gift bags, including Teddy bears, for kindergarten children that otherwise wouldn't have very happy holidays. Santa, aka Chief Master Sgt. Mark Kloeppel, has been visiting Travis area kindergarten classes for a number of years, as part of the 349th AMW's Operation Teddy bear. He says he is always surprised by some of the unselfish gift requests of these five and six-year olds. They often ask for something for the family, even a job for an unemployed dad, and are always filled with joy as they receive a gift bag from him, that includes a Teddy bear. Operation Teddy Bear is the 349th Air Mobility Wing's largest and farthest reaching community outreach project. This program began more than 25 years ago with wing members traveling to one local school and touching the lives of 35 children. Through the years, this program has grown to reach 1200-plus children annually. Fund raising for this project is on-going; in fact it never ends. Approximate cost for annual OTB visits is $15,000 per year which is supplemented with infusions of supplies and donations from local merchants who partner with the Top Three to help foster community good will and holiday spirit for disadvantaged kindergarten children in local Title 1 schools.
