Leaders from the 349th Air Mobility Wing met here the week of Jan. 27, to update and refocus the strategic plan and vision, set up the wing for success in the Commander's Inspection Program, and set priorities appropriate to the current fiscal and operational climate.

"The objective here is to align our strategy and objectives with a relevant and current vision and mission statements," said Lt. Col. Wil Link, 349th Air Mobility Wing process manager.

Participants in the first day strategy session included the wing commander, vice commander and command chief, group commanders and representatives from major functional areas.

"We accomplished an update of our vision and mission statements, and our priorities and objectives, as must be done regularly, due to changes in higher headquarters' vision, mission statement and priorities," Link said.

The work was done in an Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century framework, with management tools used by contemporary private and public organizations.

The session was facilitated by Mr. Matthew Arens, of Mainstream GS, Inc, a veteran owned management consulting firm focused on enabling high performance organizations in the public sector, and Lt. Col. C. J. Bentley, 4th Air Force process manager.

"This week of improvement events has been fantastic. Everyone has been engaged and involved planning the future direction of the wing," Bentley said.

The next day, the strategy session was followed with an AFSO21 rapid-improvement event to refine the internal control measures used in the commanders' dashboard, the Commander's Inspection Program and in monitoring of wing performance overall.

"The team created a comprehensive list of more than 150 measures used to assess compliance with policy, effectiveness and help ensure continuous improvement of our processes," said Maj. Torri Crosby, 349th AMW executive officer.

Wing leaders will use these tools to adjust efforts to maximize the achievement of strategic objectives as the Commander's Inspection Program rolls out this year.

"The ultimate purpose of this is to make sure our efforts at every level, and every mission area of the 349th, are focused on meeting the goals and needs of the Air Force Reserve Command, Air Mobility Command, the Air Force and ultimately, the nation," Link said.
