Eleven months after her actual retirement date, 349th Air Mobility Wing public affairs superintendent, Senior Master Sgt. Ellen Hatfield, was recognized with a formal ceremony Feb. 9, 2014, at the 349th Air Mobility Wing, Travis Air Force Base, Calif.

After an 11 year break in service from active duty, she felt compelled to return to the Air Force blue, in 1995, rounding out her career with more than 21 years.

At their first meeting here, Maj. Gen. Mark Kyle, former 4th Air Force commander, and now 22nd AF commander, said, with a gleam in his eye, "I know about you. Everywhere I've gone in the command, I've heard your name. You're an icon in Reserve Command public affairs."

Hatfield will continue on in her full-time civilian position at the wing. She hopes to best recent Luke Air Force Base retiree, Dorothy Rowe's, career of 70 years.
