What do you do after a successful 349th Air Mobility Wing Air Force Specialty Code training weekend? If you are 349th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, you evolve the training from AFSC to "Wrench Week" further extending it into a weeklong event.

Started by 945th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, the 349th AMXS iterated the hands-on training concept to provide Airmen training beyond the normal Unit Training Assembly. Wrench Week was a weeklong training event where Reservists train in the primary AFSC through the use of aircraft and simulators, distraction free of CBT's, appointments and other administrative tasks.

Wrench Week's objective was to provide proficiency, assist with upgrade training, and ultimately reinforce their knowledge and skills.

349th AMXS Reservists, Senior Master Sgt. Darrell Carbullido, Master Sgt. Gregory Watkins, and Master Sgt. Dustin Warner, planned and coordinated the Wrench Week events providing training opportunities for 27 traditional Reservists in their specialties along utilizing eight Air Reserve Technician trainers. Much of the planning was done on their own time. They packed every hour with training events giving priorities to actual aircraft maintenance. Their planning entailed pulling individual TBAs tailoring specific training to each trainee maximizing resources and time. They also coordinated with outside agencies to come and speak to the participants to provide a different perspective on maintenance coordination. Aircraft do not always cooperate, often real jobs were few and far between. Simulators and scenario based training were their contingency plan.

One such scenario based training required inter-agency coordination. An aircraft would be fueled simultaneous by two trucks at once. At Travis Air Force Base most fueling is done via fuel pits, but in many locations abroad, airplanes are fueled using fuel trucks. The planners coordinated with 60th Logisic Readiness Squadron petroleum, oil and lubricant section NCOIC, Tech. Sgt. Timothy Libey, to provide their personnel as well as 349th AMXS personnel dual truck refueling procedures. Fueling performed a choreographed dance of Airmen, trucks and hoses. The training was a win-win event.

349th AMXS Wrench Week was a success. It culminated in training 27 traditional reservists on AFSC specific items broadening their knowledge and increasing their proficiency. Solid planning, creativity, coordination and communication were keys to the success of Wrench Week. Many are already looking forward to the next Wrench Week.

Senior Airmen Christopher, 349th AMXS stated "This is the best training since coming to the squadron."
