Air Force Week's fun starts with a mud run Published Sept. 3, 2009 By Capt. Robin Jackson 349th Public Affairs TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Air Force Week Sacramento is set in motion Sept. 5 through 13 at various locations throughout Sacramento, California. The fun begins with an Air Force Week Mud Run Saturday, 7 a.m. at Hagan Park in Rancho Cordova. The event features a 5-mile and 2-mile obstacle course challenge. The course includes scenic views along the American River while "drill instructors" motivate runners through the race. Participants can expect to find low walls, tunnel crawls, a tire run, hay bale jumps, other various obstacles and of course the popular mud pit! To entertain those not participating in the Mud Run, the Air Force Drill Team performs precision rifle drills, the Air Force "Band of the Golden West" performs high energy music, Air Force Military Police K9 demonstration and numerous military aircraft flyovers during the event. Tops In Blue is the Air Force's premier entertainment showcase for the entire family. It includes the best in music, dance and comedy - all performed by Airmen in a 90-minute live program. The show will be live Sept. 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the California State Fair. The event is free with admission to the state fair and open to the public. A third performance will be presented Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mondavi Center in Davis, Calif. The event and parking are free and open to the public. Air Force Week Sacramento officially kicks off with the signing of the state Proclamation and a ceremony at the State Capitol Building Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. Air Force Week Sacramento serves as the premier platform to raise awareness of Air Force operations, capabilities and contributions to the joint fight, as well as a great opportunity to thank the community for their unwavering support of the military. The ceremony will feature a flyover by two C-17 Globemaster IIIs and KC-10 Extenders and performances by the Air Force Band of the Golden West and the Air Force Drill Team. Those in attendance will include the Secretary of the Air Force, the Honorable Michael B. Donley, the Commander of Air Mobility Command, Gen. Arthur Lichte, California Lt. Gov. John Garamendi and Brig. Gen. Mary J. Kight, Assistant Adjutant General, California National Guard. Other planned events throughout the week include a showing of "Fighter Pilot, Operation Red Flag" at the Esquire IMAX Theater in Downtown Sacramento Sept. 9 and performances by Aaron Tippin and the Air Force Band of the Golden West at the California Capitol West Steps Sept 11. The week will culminate with an air show at Mather Airport Sept. 12 and 13 with numerous aerial acts to include the Air Force Thunderbirds, the Air Force's premier aerial demonstration team, performing both days. Air Force Week Sacramento will put a spotlight on the great work being done by the folks stationed at Travis Air Force Base and around the Air Force. It is a chance for the community to see the immense resources of our U.S. Air Force and get a taste of what they do every day.
