The Chief of Air Force Reserve announced Oct. 1 the next assignment for the Brig. Gen. Maryanne Miller, commander, 349th Air Mobility Wing. General Miller will assume duties next month as Director of Programs and Requirements, Office of the Air Force Reserve, Headquarters United States Air Force, at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

Col. John C. Flournoy, currently the commander of the 932nd Airlift Wing, Air Force Reserve Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill., will become the 23rd commander of the 349th since the unit was established in 1943. The change of command ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 15.

The 349th Air Mobility Wing, "The Golden Gate Wing," is the largest associate reserve wing in the United States Air Force. The 349th is an operational reserve unit, not a standby force. Although predominantly a part-time force, the 349th's Citizen Airmen are trained and equipped on par with the active force, allowing them to be ready on a moment's notice. Reservists are integrated into nearly all day-to-day operations at Travis Air Force Base.

In partnership with its active-duty host, the 60th Air Mobility Wing, the Air Force Reserve Command's 349th flies, maintains and supports the C-5 Galaxy, KC-10 Extender, C-17 Globemaster III, and provides expeditionary ground support forces for operations around the globe. The 349th also includes an aeromedical evacuation squadron, which provides medical care for America's wounded warriors during airlift out of combat zones. Most of the wing's 3,000 Airmen live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Sacramento Valley.
