To ensure that boating in California is safe and enjoyable for everyone, it is important for all who use our waterways to know and abide by the regulations. Statistics show that 70 percent of reported deaths occurred on recreational boats where the operator had not received any formal boating safety instruction. In addition, alcohol was a factor in more than one-third of all fatal motorboat accidents. Each year, millions of boaters visit California's waterways seeking an enjoyable outdoor recreational experience.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary, in conjunction with 349th Air Mobility Wing Safety office, will conduct one Boating Safety Training class, Nov. 14, Bldg. 206, Training Room, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Active Duty, Reserves and civilians employees will have seating priority; dependents will be accommodated on a space available basis. There is a $25 fee for materials. There is no minimum age to take the course; however, in California you have to be 16 years of age before you can operate a power boat without adult supervision.

The State Legislature is working on requiring anyone operating a boat or personal water craft (i.e. jet ski) to have this course or equivalent and some insurance companies offer up to a 20 percent PWC insurance discount to people who take and pass a boating safety course. This class explains all required and recommended equipment for small boats and offers training in good seamanship.
