349th Wing Commander urges youth to remember our history, learn from its lessons. Published Sept. 21, 2010 By Senior Master Sgt. Ellen Hatfield 349th Public Affairs TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Reservist Col. Jay Flournoy, 349th Air Mobility Wing commander, visits with Fairfield High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps students Sept. 10, 2010 to talk about Sept. 11, 2001. Col. Flournoy was a young major assigned to the Pentagon that day in 2001, and described in detail his memories of that day. He was in the basement of the Pentagon, having dental work done by a U.S. Navy dental officer, and remembers the sound of American Airlines flight 77 hitting the building in another corridor. His wife had called him to tell him about the attack on the World Trade Center, and she actually saw the airliner crash into the Pentagon, and was frantically trying to reach him again. In his speech to the cadets, Col. Flournoy urged them to remember our history, and learn from its lessons. He also took the opportunity to visit with the cadets, talk about Air Force careers, and answer their questions.
