Colonel Burger selected to be next Travis Reserve wing commander

Col. Matthew J. Burger, commander of the 349th Operations Group, will become the next commander of the 349th Air Mobility Wing in a change of command ceremony Jan. 27, 2013.
As the commander of the largest Reserve Associate Wing in the Air Force, he will lead more than 3,100 combat ready Citizen Airmen flying and maintaining the C-17 Globemaster III, C-5 Galaxy and KC-10 Extender mobility aircraft. The wing also provides expeditionary support to the war fighter in all aspects of air base security and operations, and aeromedical evacuation.

The current wing commander, Brig. Gen. John. C. Flournoy, Jr., will take command of Headquarters Air Reserve Personnel Center, Buckley Air Force Base, Colo., next month. The general will be responsible for personnel support to nearly 1 million Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve and retired members, ensuring they are ready to deliver strategic Total Force war fighting capability for the nation.

Colonel Burger began his career upon graduation from the Air Force Academy in 1990, and has served in various assignments in the active Air Force and the Air Force Reserve. He is a command pilot with more than 4,300 flight hours in HH-1 Iroquois and HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, the KC-135R Stratotanker and C-17 Globemaster III.

The colonel's decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Air Medal, the Aerial Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Southwest Asia Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon with Gold Border.
