8/13/2012 - TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.  -- The long wait was finally over Saturday as the 349th Air Mobility Wing opened its new C-5 Galaxy operations facility. The 19,800-square foot facility houses approximately 360 Airmen assigned to the 312th Airlift Squadron and the 349th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. The two Reserve squadrons have been in temporary facilities for almost two decades.

Base leaders, community supporters and most of the squadron members watched as Maj. Michael Sovitsky, 349th AMXS commander, and Lt. Col. David Knolmayer, 312th AS commander, opened the doors to welcome all inside.

Possibly the only building on Travis with sliding barn doors on the interior, the building occupants were involved in the design, color selection and other details of the structure.
The parking area and the facility were designed to reduce environmental impact on the seasonal wetlands and nearby Union Creek, a vital wildlife habitat.

"A well-known quote says it takes a village, talking about raising a child," said Col. Matthew Burger, 349th Operations Group commander. "It was truly a community of Travis partners and outside the gate, that built this facility."
